Energy Source Continues Penetration of Higher Education Market with Recent Project at Johnson & Wales University
Energy Source, a division of Revolution Lighting Technologies (NASDAQ:RVLT), recently completed a large-scale lighting retrofit project at Johnson & Wales University achieving key benefits for the university such as reduced energy costs, mitigated environmental impact, and improved quality of light.
The firm, which provides turn-key energy conservation solutions and works extensively within the Education sector, was brought in by the university this summer to address 300,000 square feet of interior campus space utilizing antiquated, and inefficient, fluorescent lighting. After conducting an energy audit of the site, Energy Source uncovered savings opportunities and proposed a solution built around LED technology that would reduce energy consumption of retrofit lighting by 60%, save over 700,000 kWh of energy, totaling $115,000 in annual savings. The project was completed in less than 3 weeks with an accelerated timeline to complete the project in advance of the schools 2015 fall semester.
Energy Source replaced 32 watt T8 fluorescent tubes with RVLT’s 12 watt LED tubes to achieve a 60% energy reduction of retrofit lighting. The LED tubes, which require no warm-up period, can be easily dimmed to needed levels without flickering. The lamps can be tied into occupancy sensors and software-based remote controls for even more savings. LED lamp life expectancy is 70,000 hours compared to 40,000 for their fluorescent counterparts, resulting in lower ongoing maintenance costs.
Energy Source also leveraged its designation as a NationalGrid Project Expeditor to secure Utilities incentives and other assistance to make the financing of the project very attractive to their client.
Michael Lemoi, who headed the initiative on behalf of Energy Source, gives credit to advances in LED lighting technology, like RVLT’s market leading LED tubes used throughout this project. As part of this retrofit, Energy Source recycled all retrofit fluorescent bulbs, reducing the university’s needs and cost for future specialized lamp recycling through the reduction of fluorescent lamps that contain hazardous materials including mercury.
